The WinterSchool for Thinktankers -WISCH - is a unique opportunity for young and proactive individuals who are eager to develop their knowledge and understanding of Think Tanks, and prepare themselves to become future policy entrepreneurs.
It offers practical skills, opportunities and networks to help you and your think tank grow in core areas such as fundraising, communications, financial management, policy engagement and more.

Become a Policy Entrepreneur.
During this 7-day programme in Geneva (February 2020) you will acquire the tools and knowledge to prepare yourself to become a policy entrepreneur. You will also learn from prestigious experts who will share their expertise. You will have the chance to discuss and engage with these experts, plus other future Think Tank leaders from around the world. Additionally, and as Geneva hosts a unique wealth of international organisations and networks, you will have the chance to discover some of the key actors of global governance that are based there.
The Winterschool for Thinktankers is primarily focused on thinktankers, researchers and practitioners interested in engaging with and informing international policy agendas. However, anyone interests in evidence informed policy is welcome to apply.
Can I apply?
We welcome thinktankers from around the world, working in all think tank positions such as researcher, fundraising, communications, project management or human resources.
The course is designed for early and mid-career thinktankers, aspiring to future leadership roles.
We also welcome more experienced thinktankers who are perhaps moving into leadership positions, setting up their own think tank or facing a particular challenge.

The Winterschool for Thinktankers is a seven-day intensive course at the heart of international policy and collaboration, Geneva.
The programme includes:
Lectures and guided groupwork with former think tank directors and practitioners
Visits to the UN and other international agencies
City tour of Geneva
Taught by expert practitioners, the programme is designed to:
Prepare and inspire the next generation of think tank leaders
Build a community of emerging think tank leaders to support and learn from each other
Encourage staff to reflect on their think tank and how to support its development
Expert lecturers include directors and former directors at leading think tanks such as Overseas Development Institute, Chatham House, foraus, The Graduate Institute, Belgrade Center for Security Studies and Centre for Economic Policy Research. See list of last year lecturers.
Costs and logistics
The Winterschool costs 1,200 CHF. This covers:
7-day face-to-face School, including expert lectures, learning activities, networking events, and visits to key institutions in Geneva
Study pack for each core theme
Lunch during the School
City tour of Geneva
Access to an online forum for fellow participants, alumni and OTT School experts and team
Diploma upon completion of a personal learning journal
Access to On Think Tanks Fellows and alumni network
Participants are responsible for their own travel and accommodation to Geneva, and will need to cover the costs (if they are not already based in the city).

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and applicants informed as soon as a decision has been reached. Applicants should be prepared to pay the cost of the school within a couple of days after receiving a confirmation of attendance.

The Think Tank Hub: Founded in April 2014, is an initiative undertaken by the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) in collaboration with the think tank foraus – the Swiss Think Tank on foreign policy. The hub aims to create a dynamic and innovative platform for think tanks specialized in various fields.
On Think Tanks: A leading global platform dedicated to the study and support of policy research institutes and the broader policymaking environment. On Think Tanks works to promote, develop, and support initiatives of think tanks given their key role on the contribution of knowledge to the world of politics.
